Those delightfully cheerful "Ornithogalum dubium" are out in "full force"
at several nurseries in the S.F. Bay Area. If you have a resale license and
"access" to the Nurserymen's Exchange, they come in 3" pots, 12 to a box/flat
at $2.35 cents. On the other hand, you can get them for $6 at the little
nursery/florist across from Roberts of Woodside for $6/pot -- same 3"pot.
They are available at Ladera Garden Center for $4.95. I think I saw one for a
dollar less a week ago but I don't remember where, so if you are wanting a
large display for a basket for flower pot I'd recommend phoneing around.
Last August, Roger Sieloff wrote in to the Medit-plant list and commented that
"most are hardy in zones 8 to 10... as per his source, which wasn't mentioned
Tristan in the UK says that they are hardy in the UK zone 8 to 9, but I'm
not sure how that corresponds to California's zone system, frankly, as Sunset
doesn't show any other zone-system maps. Any enlightenment out there would be
appreciated.
Speaking of the Nurserymen's Exchange, I've noticed the past 2 or 3 years
that the picture on the front of their "Bletilla" orchid bulbs is really a
Pleione. I phoned them about it the first time I noticed it, but they haven't
changed the packaging. If there is anyone out there who has a source for
Pleione bulbs, I'm looking for several dozen.
Many thanks!
