Re: 'native' plants vs.. 'other' plants


>From my experience with the Watershed Institute at my school, i can
tell you that they would only use seeds from plants in the areas we
were restoring. They would never use seeds from plants even a few away
from the plants at the site they were restoring. The reason was that
the genetics of plants in california habitats are so specific that even
at a few miles away the plants are baically genetically different from
the ones at the spot you intend to rehabilitate. This was true with the
beach plants. Seed from a Menzies Wall flower on Shell beach near
carmel would never be used to rehabilitate the dunes on Del monte
Beach, only a few miles up the coast from Shell Beach.
