To add to the discussion about which roses survive in warm winter locales, I
live in West Los Angeles and have had very little success with the beautiful
David Austen or other English roses and with grandifloras as well. I have
much success with hybrid teas, in the main ordered from Jackson & Perkins,
bareroot. It is clear since receiving at least 10 fold rainfall this year
thanks to El Nino that the David Austens require much more water than I am
willing to give them because both of the plants I have left flowered solely as
a result of the deep rain. One had never flowered before, the other bore only
three roses last spring and nothing the rest of the year.
