I am delighted to see Nan's message about the desert bloom, because I'm
planning a trip to Death Valley (the one place you can be guaranteed not
to have rain) with my family in mid April. I've done this peak bloom trip
many times, but have never managed to get to Wild Rose Canyon (on the
western side of the Panamint Mtns.) to see the Desert Candles (Caulanthus
inflatus) in bloom.
I once saw Glen Keator (sp?) of the SF Strybing Arboretum show slides of
his successful search for this bizarre plant and have this on my "life
list" of things to see. Its lavender flowers are borne on an upright
yellow stalk that appeared to be several feet high in some cases. Long
lanceolate leaves grow up from the base. One of nature's more creative
evolutionary moments.
If anyone has seen these, do you have any location information where I
might be more likely to find them?
