Oxalis and another man's treasure

Dear All,

I was hiking at Fort Ross State Park (North of San Francisco) today between
rain storms with a group of fellow hikers. We stopped for lunch in the
picnic area which was a carpet of Oxalis pes-caprae. It was almost solid
color and the area was extending across the road, over the cliff and
heading towards the meadows and the bluff. My companions thought it was
beautiful and could not understand my dismay that it could replace some of
the native vegetation if the area keeps expanding.

The spring wildflowers are appearing in Northern California too although we
are not having the display mentioned in the desert as yet. The Iris
douglasiana has been quite spectacular on the bluffs overlooking the ocean
however and today there were more Sanicula arctopoides than I have ever
seen before so that you could look back and appreciate why they have the
common name, Footsteps of Spring.
