Re: `Britain Meets the Bay'?

	Trevor and you-all!

I doubt that I can add much that is useful to this thread, but here
goes anyway.
I live halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco and about 10
miles from the Pacifc Ocean. I believe it is considered to be a cool
mediterranean desert climate. We get about 20 inches of precipitation a
year.
I know I should be growing those kind of plants but I can see them
every time I drive out of town. Somehow it doesn't satisfy whatever little
artistic urge I have.
Also many of the plants I admire are not of this ilk! And so I
plant what I like, treat it with a great deal of benign neglect and hope
for the best. Yes, I have lost a lot of plants but I try to be
philosophical about it. I have also been surprised occasionally when some
plant survives unexpectedly and rewards me for my faith (ignorance!)
We have the ridiculous hobbies of growing bromeliads and
caudiciforms. We have an unheated greenhouse which does provide some
protection. People do seem to enjoy it although my wife thinks it is an
unorganized jungle. But then again, they are jungle plants so what's wrong
with that.
Bromeliads pup and I wind up with extras. So we've been taking a
number of them and planting them outside. I've been very pleased to find
that many of them survive quite well. They don't bloom as often as they'd
like but I have enough that do to make it enjoyable. And I have a few
Daffodils and Clivias here and there to give some nice color.
If the sound of this unorganized horticultural disaster area isn't
too repulsive and if you're travelling down highway 101, give me call,
visit and perhaps I'll remember to offer you a cup of coffee.
