My Silverhill Seeds catalogue, Jan 1999 lists
three species, all with edible fruit, glossy leaves
and thorns and all from, as you mentioned,
the eastern, non-mediterranean part of S. Africa:
C. bispinosa - shrub to 5m, red fruit, hardy to
about 30 F
C. edulis - scrambling shrub to 3m 'large' purple
fruit, hardy to 30F
C. macrocarpa - shrub to 4m, red fruits, good
on coasts and good hedge material, hardy to 20F
(This must be the one we in North America are
all familiar with; and I think Silverhill
are being a little optimistic about cold-hardiness.)
And, if you would forgive my repetiveness, I'm
trying C. haematocarpa which I've got very little
information on - the saplings are hardy to 26F
even in small pots.
