"English" gardens in California

I agree with your concern.

I think part of the problem is that there's not a single
well-defined "California" landscape style that can serve as
a counterpoint to the dominant English look.  Instead we
have a hodge-podge of sometimes very different ideas from
different designers.  It makes for great art, but most
people do not want to live in a piece of modern art (for one
thing, the resale value isn't always very good).  Give
people a choice between safe/well-defined versus
experimental, and most will choose safe.

If one wants to campaign for acceptance of a California
design style, I think it'll fist be necessary to more
clearly define that style.
