Carpenteria californica

Horticulture magazine recommends this shrub in its March 1999 issue.  Any
other recommendations for it from this group?  Advice?  Are the flowers
exotically fragrant as the article says or only slightly, pleasantly
fragrant as Sunset says?  

For Oakland Hills, Sunset zone 16 or USDA 9.
