(There is one deciduous
beech in Tassie, just a few in S America, none in NZ, mainland Aussie,
John.
The Tasmanian Deciduous Beech - Nothofagus Gunii - tanglefoot, Deciduous beech. Very fire-susceptible endemic species is found in subalpine rainforest and alpine heath on the wettest mountains in the state of Tasmania. It rarely exceeds 8m in height. A beautiful sight in the Cradle Mountain World heritage area at Autumn time, a bronze-yellow colour
I grow a few in the country garden but they are very slow. The mature tree gives a feeling of having being with us forever [as it just about has been!] the leaves are deep green, dainty and deeply indented on the upper surface
