Before we get too involved in our spring activities (including ripping
out plants that died over the winter), I would encourage the California
gardeners who incurred losses from the Dec. 20-22 freeze (and subsequent
freezes) to share what was learned, then we can close the books on this
winter. The previous immediate aftermath reports were a bit premature,
since some plants may have recovered by now. These "weather events"
provide an opportunity to reflect on bad plant choices, improper
planting techniques and locations, and any other observations for
gardeners who tend to push plants to their limits of cold hardiness.
There seems to be some interest in the group about the effects of shade
on frost damage. Now's the time to share what you learned about that.
Some of you also are affiliated with public gardens and probably have
some things to report from there.
My report will be posted on the date of the Vernal Equinox.
