Dave: Two suggestions, not of specific plants but of places to ask the
question:
(1) Mark Brent, Head Gardener at Lamorran House, St Mawes, grows
several outdoors in that exceptionally sheltered garden. His e-mail is
mark-lamorran@kernow.net. I'm sure he'd have ideas as to what might be
feasible.
(2) Paul Spracklin's UK Oasis website has lots of admirers of agaves
and aloes and suchlike prickly critters contributing to it. Why not
