Dear all Members responding to places to see in Crete:
Thanks so much for giving me so much useful advice, and I will have to let you all know which places I was able to get to. So far Crete is just gorgeous, and I find myself wishing to be able to focus on truly mediterannean plants when I get back home, after seeing how they look over here. I know that once I get back to Berkeley, however, the different conditions will not allow, since I have a garden full of shade and it never gets as hot as it will later get over here, so it's best to just enjoy it over here. It is fun to see the gardens of the villagers, which are truly beautiful without being designed, and use so many plants which are so common in California, but in fresh(or perhaps more truly, traditional), ways. The arbors of grapes and roses and bougainvilleas are especially nice, and the roses and pelargoniums in gardens are just brilliant at the moment. The mountains here are also spectacular, and remind me very much of our Big Sur co! as! ! tline, but with Cretan and Byzantine ruins and lots of villages everywhere. Truly an island to be experienced!! I can't avoid saying, however, that Riyadh, Saudi Arabia was also quite floriferous at the moment, with the Cassia fistula, Plumeria obtusa and acuminata, and Delonix regia trees all in full bloom in early May, but with 120F temps already! Crete with a perfect 75F is heavenly at the moment. Thanks again everyone for your replies...

David-Had a chance to visit Sissinghurst when I was in England a couple of
years ago. Highly recommend it as crowds can be minimized by entering when
they first open (around 9:30 or 10AM). The buses usually arrive an hour after
opening. Well worth the visit when we were there in mid-June! Still ranks
high among the many gardens we visited that summer ie Hidcote, Great Dixter(a
personal favorite), Barnsley House, Hestercombe. Also got a hold of the
"yellow book" and visited some private gardens of which there are bound to be
some open whereever you wander in Merry old England. Enjoy!
