Barbara,
This is a cultivar form of S. greggi that has varigated leaves. Dark green
with yellowish edge. The flowers are a deep red. It is called "Desert
Blaze". Quite nice. Could this be it?
Also, on the Laurus front. . .I notice that the Sunset Western Garden book
notes that it is famous for suckering often.
