I know a garden in a small city called Castlemaine in central
Victoria (state) of Australia that is surrounded by high sheds of
rusted corrugated iron and ancient clapboard fences. As ugly a
setting as could be imagined. Yet the owner/ designer, Barbara
Maund, has made a great assett of these decrepit features by very
cleverly picking up the silver and rust colours in her planting
scheme and complimenting them with a range of subtle foliage and
flower effects that includes orange and wine red (in small doses).
The garden is very formally laid out but utilises rustic 'found'
materials for paving, edgings etc and also makes clever use of
naive sculptures and small pieces of pottery. Sometimes a clever
gardener can make a mundane background beautiful instead of
trying to hide it (all too often inadequately).
