Can you I.D. this tree?

I was out yesterday doing a plant survey of an area that burned in a
wildfire last fall, and ran across a small tree that has me stumped. I
don't think it is native to northern California, because I've never seen it
before, and it's growing not far from an old homestead in a shady area near
a small stream. The branches have thickened, corky-looking wings
reminiscent of Euonymus alata. There was a small grove of these plants,
about 10-15 feet tall; most of the tops were killed by the fire, but they
were resprouting from the base. The leaves are simple, serrate, ovate,
bright green, with deeply impressed pinnate veins. I would guess they are
deciduous, but am not sure about this since all I have to go on is the
spring growth. Any ideas?
