Strange Plant!!!

Now here's something for all you experts. I have no idea why she contacted me because this sounds like a plant from Mars! But I'm looking forward to what I hope is a flood of conjectures and maybe even a positive ID!!

Dear sir -

Hoping you can help us find this plant. My aged mother showed my daughter this plant many years ago. She took a leaf (fairly large and rounded) and rubbed it in her hands to break down the veins, etc. Then placing the stem in her mouth she blew up this leaf like a balloon.

We questioned her recently as to what the plant was. At first she couldn't even remember doing this, but several weeks later when asked she immediately called it a "Live For Ever". After searching the web I discovered that this was also known as Hens & Chicks which we have all raised for years so I know that wasn't the plant.

Certainly hope you can help us find this plant so we can grow it and introduce my grandchildren to it. Thank you in advance.
