Dierama is actually a summer rainfall subject & while being very drought
hardy , I don't believe it would get through the summer without watering.
My particular favourite here is the genus Haemanthus. The winter rainfall
species are all autumn flowering, before the foliage, & then have the
largest lushest leaves imaginable. There are also evergreen white flowered
species which are very dry resistant & go well with a little supplemental
summer watering.
Veltheimea is another good genus. I've both the pink & lemon forms of V.
bracteata. Spring flowering.
I grow these in association with several Scadoxus species, which are all
winter dormant, so as one lot dies down the next comes up. Interplanted with
Clivias so there always seems to be something in flower. They're all shade
lovers & I grow them under a plum tree, where they get intense root
competiton, but handle it fine.
