Crushed lava would be fine as long as it is in reasonably big lumps. and
indeed the styrofoam "peanuts" should also work well and would have the
advantage of extreme lightness. In NZ I would recommend crushed pumice,
a volcanic material which I guess partakes of some of the properties of
both the materials you suggest.
The main thing is to find something which will hold those very fine
materials apart and let the water run through freely, and as you say not
make the container too heavy in the process.
