The bigger the better if you want roots. I'd go for at least a foot out
from the trunk on the small one and 3 or 4 feet on the large one.

I've heard these are actually pretty easy to root even when they're large
cuttings, provided you can callous the cuts thoroughly. I think the stumps
offset fairly readily too. I'm just hypothesizing here from paying
attention to some of the larger specimens in Balboa park and around town
where the plants have obviously been injured and subsequently offset as a
result. I haven't found anyone willing to let me experiment with any big
specimens. Yet. :)
