Re: MEDITERRANEAN!!!!!

Since we're all in the mood to celebrate things Mediterranean, I'll
mention the wonderful evening we had at Sparoza in Peania (the MGS
headquarters outside of Athens) on Wednesday May 9th. The garden was
full of delphiniums, the moon was bright, and even the new Athens
airport could be seen from the "garden on the Greek hillside." The
society's mentor Sally Razelou introduced new President Katherine
Greenberg and George Sfikas to the Athens chapter over wine and Greek
delicacies. Mr. Sfikas is the author of 30 books on Mediterranean
flora and fauna, and was the guide for the California group's
medit-plant tour of the Pelopponese, Crete and Turkey. A very
interesting slide show of the native plants they encountered in Greece
was presented to us, which was all the more fascinating with the natural
settings of Monemvasia, Astros, Ghitheo, Omalo, Chania, Rethimno and
many other places. I also was pleased to make the acquaintance of Irini
Ramphou, whom I had "met" on this forum...such are the wonders of the
Internet!

Also wanted to make a comment for Charles....I sympathize with his
hindsight in not seeing the beauty of foreign lands (or even out own
back yards) when we are youthful and more prone to risky or even
destructive acts. How to package this wisdom in some form for the
young? Better yet, for the military of all nations?

Spring is taking its time to spring here in Athens. May...and colder
than last month, or all of winter, for that matter! Hope some of you
will make it to the AGM here in Athens in October. See you then, Karen
V. in Athens.
