re pruning Melaleuca

I am not offended.  I was sold these trees as "hedges" - obviously
mis-informed, but all I want to do now is make the best of it & try to get
the lower part to sprout.  I am concerned I have damaged them & would
appreciate any advice on how to make the best of what I have.
