Trip to S. Africa/Western Cape

Dear all,
I am wanting advice on must see sights in South Africa
for a botanical trip I'll being taking August
19-September 6, 2002. We'll be touring the Western
Cape and Namaqualand, and I am thinking of extending
my stay to see more of South Africa and perhaps
Mozambique and Madagascar after the tour is over.
Would love to hear from anyone with suggestions on
specific places to see/stay. My interests are rather
catholic; from mediterraneans to
tropicals/subtropicals, succulents, proteas,
geophytes. As I also speak portuguese, I thought a
visit to Mozambique could be interesting as well, but
don't know if the situation is really ideal for
independent travel there. Madagascar has always been
a dream, and seems so much closer from South Africa,
but may be unrealistic within just an additional 3
week period.
Input from locals or people having been there is most
welcome!
