Could be both. I remember reading a doctorial dissertation on plant phenols
once. Some of these form the plant ' antibodies ' & fight off plant disease.
The thesis was that they must be oxidised to be fully operative.
Anaerobic conditions around the roots don't allow the phenolic oxidation
which then allows the pathogenic attack.
