low-maintenance plants

Joe,
Back on the low-maintenance idea, I would also have to include two grasses I've grown fond of: Muhlenbergia rigens, which I trim the flower spikes from once a year; and Pennisetum setaceum "rubrum" which I hack with my electric pruners to 8 inches or so in late winter/ early spring.  Other than that they are completely carefree and the spikes of Pennisetum are so lovely in late summer and autumn bouquets.  :-) Karrie
