A great many thanks to all who replied both on and off line. The
general consensus was that Stewartia are not at all easy and need
quite narrow climatic conditions to do well. My mistake was
probably to try initially with S. pteropetiolata - perhaps the
most difficult. The advice seems to be that S. pseudocamellia var
koreana would be the variety of choice given the local conditions
and I shall try again in the autumn. Thank you all for your help.
