Grapes in Sardinia

Friends recently returned from a visit to Sardinia.  They described vineyards in which grapes are grown without wires or posts.  From the photo they brought back, the  vines look like V shaped standards.  They describe the soil as gravelly, quite loose.  The couple who own the field in question said that they can pick all the fruit  in a morning.  As they live some distance away, they pay local farmers to care for the field.

Does anyone have information about how these grapes are grown and whether these methods might work in north west Oregon?
