I spent about 6 hours at the UC Davis Arboretum yesterday, and saw a plant
there in the Mediterranean section (or herb garden? at the southernmost end
of the Arb.) that I did not recognize. It had a lovely fragrance, like a
fruity spearmint. The smooth alternate leaves, light sagey-green or
gray-green, were nearly clasping the stem and held not quite vertically;
maybe an inch and a half long. The plants, surrounding a bench, were
overall less than a foot high.
Hot hot hot hot day. Other plants of note were all the happy multitrunked
western redbuds (Cercis occidentalis) growing on the banks of the creek and
a few huge Anemopsis californica at water's edge.
