Hardy fuchsias

When we had the record-breaking freeze here in California in 1990, I lost thirty-five hybrid fuchsias. All of my species fuchsias (all were in the ground) froze, but in a year every one had come back. So I stick to the species - another reason, they do not get the Brazilian fuchsia mite, which I see on friends' modern fuchsias all the time. The species bloom in autumn and winter, which is nice for a garden which has its big flush in spring and summer.  Bill Grant, central coast California
