re:unknown shrubs


It does indeed fit the Botanica descriptions and pictures of Calycanthus, but the flowers look like a cross between floridus and occidentalis because of the paler tips.  Also, the cultivation requirements make it truly remarkable that it is growing where it is, since there really isn't summer water available there and it in full baking sun.   Our elevation is at the very lowest reaches of the Sierras, though, so it is probably occidentalis.   I'll have to look closer next time I drive by to see if there is runoff from the restaurant irrigation that may be watering it!  I'm just so surprised that I never noticed this particular shrub around here before!
