Kitty,
As it grows, Gloriosa leans away from the light--which means it would lean
in toward your lilac bush and grab ahold of its twigs with the tendrils at
the ends of its leaves. When it starts to blossom, new shoots will emerge
from the base of each flower cluster, thus climbing higher and setting new
inflorescences.
I have found it extends the blooming season to cut off the faded flowers
individually before the seed capsules begin to expand and to give it a shot
of Miracle-Gro or fish emulsion in mid-season. I grow them in two-gallon
pots, and move them out to a porch when they are in bloom--then move them
back to partial shade when they are finished.
