I love that one can find native prickly pears in
Sequim, Washington (48 degrees north latitude? & a few
dozen miles from temperate rainforest), and Douglas
firs in Mesoamerica. I love being able to contrive a
subtropical island garden in San Francisco or a
stone-fruit orchard on a subtropical island.
However, for definition's sake, I would settle on the
range of cultivation for the olive tree as my concept
for a strict mediterranean climate.
