Hello-
Can you recommend a pine tree for my small garden?
I have designed a Mediterranean garden for my new home in Corona, California in Riverside County. Please see the 4 attached images of my designs created on my computer. My designs includes plantings of bay, olive, citrus, sage, rosemary, aloe, santolina, palm, phlomis, echium, Tiny Tower Italian cypress, podocarpus 'Icy Blue', agonis flexusa 'After Dark', agave and more.
I would prefer the tree to have a mature height of 20' - 30'. The site has full sun exposure. According to the Sunset Garden Book, I live in zone 18-19 (very high heat in the summer). My home's native soil is very poor; it seems to be clay-based, but drains quickly due to a high concentration of gravel.
Although I love their look, I have dismissed Pinus pinea, Pinus brutia and Pinus halepensis due to their very large mature height. I am considering Pinus edulis, but its extremely slow growth rate is not ideal. Can you confirm my choice of Pinus edulis, or can you recommend others?
I have attended a garden design talk by Jan Smithen of "Sun Drenched Gardens", visited many local arboretums, extensively researched books and the internet, and made many trips to the Mediterranean-inspired plantings of the Newport Coast area of South Orange County for inspiration and reference, but am at a loss as to the correct choice of pine and have been unable to find a comprehensive source of information to help me make my choice.
Thank you so much for your time and expertise. I greatly appreciate it.
