what eats avocado leaves and fruit?

My fledgling avocado never seems to grow to any dimension and the fruits never develop. Today, I noticed that the fruits that were pea sized a few weeks ago are totally gone, look to be eaten to a nub. And the new soft leaves are now just the lower halves. The top halves have been eaten off. Any ideas who the culprit might be?
