Well, sounds like I set you on a real adventure Moira!
As it happens, I am a botanist so go ahead and send me the references.
I've also attached a powerpoint from Israel that includes images of
the tulips - there are three species, polychroma, systola, and
agenensis.
Enjoy!
First of all Nan I must apologise for inadvertantly sending you no less than
three copies of the original reply. Let's just say I suffered a senior
moment.
The path to my information through Google led via "Flora of Israel" to the
Flora itself on line. This comes up dauntingly in Hebrew, but in the left
hand corner of the masthead is the word English and when you have clicked on
that you will find Search on the extreme right of the menue from which
there is an orderly progression to the wanted information.
It would seem if one is to believe the Hebrew University that the latest
thinking recognises only two Negev species. They reckon all red desert
tulips are A systola and agenensis is confined to Mediterranean Maquis and
forest.
Thanks for the powerpoint it was really beautiful and Tony and I certainly
enjoyed it..
Moira
