Last year I asked for comments about planting using
grass'swales' as protection for tube stock plants in revegatation programs. We
trialed the method in several areas with different species in the planting
season and have just done a count. I am DELIGHTED with the results. For the
first time we have had a success rate of 80-100 percent (depending on species).
We had two flash floods across the property and
plants in those areas in which we trialed 'grass protection' still survived at
levels that astonished us - well above 80 percent. Those areas in which we
planted in simple rows did not do nearly as well - 40-50 per cent survival.
Leaving grass rows between planted rows and planting in irregular patterns seems
to have provided much greater protection than we anticipated.
Thanks to all those who offered suggestions at the
time.
I think it was Diane who suggested something like
snow fencing at the time, and we have used a flourescent orange roll out stuff,
something like snow fencing, to mark out the areas for our redesigned garden.
Our neighbours, on seeing the colour, think we have lost our minds but I can see
the areas and their proportions clearly so many thanks to whoever it was who
suggested it if it was not Diane.
