In coastal Long Beach, our Chasmanthe bloom in late winter/early spring, Nan. They come up behind our roses while those are still dormant, then we cut them back at the same time the roses are setting their first spring bloom. Yes, they are invasive. After the flowers fade we control them by cutting off the stalks that provide new bulblets and typically pull up some bulbs every year since they multiply underground as well. But they’re lovely when nothing else is blooming in that garden and the foliage fills in where the roses were cut back. We tolerate their bad habits with some serious control during their growth cycle. They go dormant in the warm weather, so they are no further challenge until next year when their foliage pops up again with the winter rain.
