I regularly identify plants for clients, friends, other professionals, and social media groups. I seem to have a knack and eyes that can see the details required. I usually enjoy it but it is sometimes burdensome. Years ago, when I learned that plant ID apps were being developed, I was intrigued, pleased, and dubious. I've experimented with various types over the years and cannot recommend any.
I just tried PlantSnap on my iPad. They give you a free trial on less than a handful of images. Attached is one of the images I used - Salvia 'Hot Lips'. Yeah, I know, it's unusual, but I was shocked at the results shown at the right of my attachment (NOT EVEN CLOSE!). Other tries did not yield good results (though less bizarre) and I ended up adding my images and identifications to their database. Not looking to beta-test their product, I think I will decline using it in the future.
