I have two large Camphor trees between the street and the sidewalk.  I can say for one thing they are the messiest trees I have ever encountered 
except for the Calif.  pepper tree.  I have started to plant my left over  plants under them since the public could damage my more unique 
varieties.  But I have 2 Xylosma bushes which I am training into weeping sm. trees for screening.  They can do quite well in sun and part sun.  
They have gone from 1' to 4' in 2 1/2 years.  I also have iris, red-hot Pokers, red miscanthus(ornamental grass), some leftover trailing  
pelargoniums, daylilies and specie geraniums that have sprouted from seed. I also have those darn weeds too!  I have tended to put drought 
tolerant plants directly under them.  They shade most of the front and while not directly next to the trees I have camillias, marguerites, fuschias, 
geraniums, bulbs, Brugmansia , jasmines, and various other stuff.  I tend to collect hard to find plants and will try anything anywhere.  If it 
grows, lucky for me and if it doesn't, I have learned something though I will dig it up an move the plant in-order to save it if possilble.

My trees have high canopees so there is sun in the mid day on my plants.   I live in the same zone as you only in No. Cal. which is surprising as I 
moved from Thousand Oaks to Los Gatos and the only thing different is that the nights are warmer up here.
