Ronald and Medit-Plants-persons -

Another effective means of detering slugs and snails is a particular
mulch material. There is a shedded Redwood bark product commonly
called 'gorilla hair mulch' in this area. It is the shredded fibers
of our Coastal Redwood tree's bark. Being very dry and bristlely to
the touch, these terrestial mollusks do not seem to cross it. An
Irish friend (transplanted to Oakland) of mine said he had great
success using it around his Hostas (which I would never even try as
the snails and slugs find these beauties so palatable!). In general,
I do not use this material as it does not decompose easily (thereby
enriching the soil - one of my main interests), but it is great for
this use as well as remaining 'stable' on a steeply sloping ground.
