Yup,
>From somewhere in the dark recesses of my mind I've applied the common
name of deer weed to a species of Lotus I see in the eastern Mojave, in
protected areas on mountain slopes. Looking in the Jepson there is a
Lotus dendroideus veatchii with a common name of San Miguel Island
Deerweed. Jaeger's Desert Wildflowers has a Broom Deer-Weed (Lotus
scoparius), Pygmy Deer-Weed (Lotus haydonii) and Pale Leaved Deer-Weed
(Lotus leucophyllus). The last two species have since been referred to
another species, which ones aren't obvious to me at the moment. It's
possible that the Deer Weed name is commonly used in other areas than
the deserts.
My recollection of the desert deer weeds is that they grow on, under or
around other shrubs. They tend to be somewhat loose and don't dominate
or strangle other plants. Flowers are smallish, they do have leaves, and
the leaves far exceed the flowers. There are no Deer Weeds in any of my
transects.
