Have been following the discussion on lawns. When recently rebuilding our
garden we elected to have no lawn and therefore zero maintainance.
Maintainance time is worse than the cost of water!
But for low water consumption lawns, the Los Angeles Times newspaper did an
article some time ago (see their archives at html//:www.latimes.com) on
lawn substitutes. They were very up on using Yarrow (Achillea). When mowed
regularly (a nylon line weed wacker does the job very nicely, so they said)
it is soft and green, pleasent to walk and play on, and need practically no
water. Might need to be replaced every four or five years.
