Hello again, I guess you may have noticed from my email signature that I
work in the area of weeds and weed control. My actual job here is to
assess plant weediness prior to importation or at the very least prior
to planting. But that is not what I wish to tell you all about.
For many months several members of our group here in Agriculture Western
Australia (A.W.A) plus two people from Conservation and Land Managements
(C.A.L.M.), Flora Research Group have been feverishly working on a book
detailing all the known naturalised weeds found in Wetsern Australia.
We have documented about 1100 species in the text and there are over 600
photos and illustrations.
Now the vast majority of these plants are of medit origin or medit
climates and are weeds all over the world, while the notes in the text
about a species distribution in WA may be of little concern to people
overseas, the main aim of the book is to aid indentification.
The photos were lovingly taken to maximise the chance of ID (mostly
flower/fruit/specific structure shots) Penny Hussey, Greg Keighery
(Botanists with C.A.L.M.) and myself took the vast majority of the
photos and we rejected hundreds as being "not good enough"
The Text was written by: Jon Dodd (A.W.A.), Greg Keighery, Penny Hussey
and Roger Cousens (ex AWA now Latrobe University, Melbourne) This
combination of two AWA weed scientists and two CALM botanists has
produced a book that I feel will hold its own for many years to come and
provide a valuable reference for farmers, gardeners, students and
environmentalists.
We have almost completed the final proofs and expect to send to the
printer in a week or so.
We expect the price to be around the $30-40 mark in a softback.
I'm pretty sure the book will be available through this departments
publications section and we should be able to handle overseas orders as
we do a lot of intrastate mail orders, WA is a big place!
I will post a message advising you when the book is available and give
details for anyone wishing to order a copy.
It's funny but as we were going through the slides looking for "that
shot" we continually remarked on how pretty these weeds were, which is
not suprising really as the majority were introduced as horticultural
species. But the proofs of the book I have seen still highlight this,
it looks nice!
Cheers,
