Centranthus ruber

Up until recently, amongst the dereliction of old Limerick, this plant in
it's red, and pink form and also common blue Buddleja thrived uncontested.
It was always an awesome experience to go walking around the old areas of
the city at this time of year and to see how profusely these plants had
colonized the black limestone and 18thC brick of the bastardized medieval
buildings. Absolutely beautiful.
That was then, pre Celtic Tiger. Now everything is being swept away for new
roads and irony of ironies, a new medieval quarter. No doubt in time this
will sport hanging gardens of Surfinia petunias and Pelargoniums. Still, old
Centranthus ruber is a tenacious character, we may not have seen the last of
it.
