I'm told peonies secrete a sticky, sweet tasting substance on the buds that
ants find irresistable. Depending on whom you read, this is either
beneficial in that it assists in the buds opening, or potentially harmful in
that the ants can spread fungal disease spores. I've never had peonies
without ants, so don't know if their absence delays bud opening, but have
fortunately never noticed any disease problems either.
