SUNSET recommends it for their ZOnes 1-22 [all but the mildest winter
Zones
in California, eg, those where winter-deciduous tree fruit don't
perform. A major feature of H.quercifolia is its fall color, and some
frost would be reuqired to bring this out.]... It certainly performs
superbly in dry-summer
sites in western Oregon, both in sun and in dry shade [competition with
surface-rooting trees]. Little irrigation is required here, once
established in heavy soil. I'd expect that irrigation is required in
areas with a longer dry season than Oregon.
