Hi Paul
Nice to meet you. As far as I can make out your climate has quite a lot
of affinities with mine, but before I can make any useful suggestions I
really need to know a bit about your temperatures- Maximum summer and
minimum winter)
Regarding Telophias. In my opinion the only one really worth growing is
the New South Wales Waratah, T speciosissima, which will take light to
moderate frosts. It should be grown in full sun and needs a deep stony,
very well-drained soil, not too rich, but also requires a regular supply
of water, especially when young and appreciates a mulch of leafmould or
compost to give a cool rootrun.
T oreades is more cold-hardy, but to my way of thinking is much less
attractive as it has smaller flowers and very dark rather sombre-looking
foliage. It seems to be a very tough plant, growing almost anywhere and
thriving on neglect.
