Most interesting, Cara - I'm curious (as an ex-Vic
person); just where
are you? Somewhere in the north west by the sound of it .. I loved reading about your birds - I had just been thinking about scissors-grinders; there are none here, though willy wagtails are making a comeback, thank goodness, after almost disappearing due to insecticide use some years ago. Beverly,
I'm in the Wimmera (just), SW of
Horsham, and with a few timely spring showers coming through. We
tend to experience Adelaide's weather a day after it has. The country
looks okay, but our local water storage is desperately low. We
have been fortunate enough, in the past, to be able to fill dams with water from
the supply, through an open channel system. There will be
considerably less on offer this year. There's a real challenge ahead for
local farmers and their livestock....and the gardeners.
The willy wagtail population is very much alive
and thriving here. They choose to nest in some extremely perilous
positions at times. My brother and sister-in-law have a nest and
babes on a regularly used outside doorway - brave little
bods. I'm sure you would have experienced the way they like to call
out on moonlit nights. The scissors-grinders aren't as common, but I
often see them fluttering around outside my lounge room
windows.
