Dear Lee,
Very interesting stuff:
1 Indeed we have this September October peak in the rainfall pattern.
It is very typical for this area and we learn to live with it. The
messsage for us is to plant early before the October rains start.
January February are generally quite dry which very often goes on till
the end of March when again we can have some heavy rain.It often happens
that our bulbs (and gardens) need watering during the March period.
The interesting part of this pattern is that the winterresting bulbs
such as Hedychium, Cyrthanthus Chlidanthus, Polyanthus, Sprekelia etc
can stay in the ground with out too much danger of rotting due to excess
water in the winter.

Indeed I also wondered how they manage so well there. I imagine that
you New Zealand folks shelter the dormant bulbs from summerrains?
Greetings from France where it is actually raining very heavily
