Whilst the hummingbirds are being discussed I have a question some of you
Americans may be able to help with.
The old world counterpart of these is the sunbirds, which range from Africa,
through Asia into Northern Australia. Fill the same niche but are more
inclined to perch to sip nectar rather than hover.
A couple of Americans visitors have said they find them more interesting
for this as it gives you time to study them & appreciate the colours, which
you can't really do with the Hummingbirds. I've put a special feeder in the
garden to try & supplement their food supply when flowering is off. Do you
do the same thing in the US & more to the point does anyone have any ideas
on a correct feed.? Someone told me straight out sugarwater is bad for them
& causes diuresis. Whether this is true or not I have no idea.
